Centromere protein I (CENP-I/hMis6/ICEN19), a 83 kDa protein, is a component of the centromere specific chromatin complex in interphase, called CENP-A chromatin or ICEN, and forms basis for the inner-kinetochore plate in metaphase. CENP-I is essential for the kinetochore function of equal segregation of daughter chromosomes1).
