| Background: | Sterol regulatory binding proteins (SREBP) are membrane-bound transcription factors that regulate cholesterol and fatty acid homeostasis. SREBP proteins are key transcriptional regulators of triglyceride synthesis and lipogenic enzymes such as fatty acid synthase. SREBP-1a and SREBP-1c are derived from the same gene by alternative splicing, but they appear to have distinct roles in adipocyte fat metabolism. Overexpression of SREBP-1a results in greatly increased rates of fatty acid synthesis and enhanced fatty acid secretion, while overexpression of SREBP-1c inhibits adipocyte differentiation, causing diabetes and a loss of white adipose tissue. |
