| Background: | Inositol polyphosphate 5-phospha- tases selectively remove the phosphate from the 5-position of various phosphatidylinositols, which function as second messengers to regulate events at cell membranes, such as membrane trafficking and cell morphology. Synaptojanin 1 is a phosphoinositide (PI) phosphatase that selectively removes the 3-, 4-, and 5-phosphates from PIs. Two splice variants of synaptojanin 1 include a 170 kDa that is widely expressed in non-neuronal cells and a 145 kDa form that is found only in adult brain. Synaptojanin is the only other major brain protein besides dynamin that binds the SH3 domain of amphIPPhysin, suggesting a role for synaptojanin in endocytosis of synaptic vesicles and the regulation of the actin cytoskeleton. |
