| Background: | gamma-Catenin, also known as plakoglobin is highly homologous to ï¢-catenin that interacts with cadherins to mediate cell-cell adhesion and associates with LEF/TCF family to regulate the expression of genes that are involved in cell fate determination and cell proliferation. The role of ï§-catenin differs from that of ï¢-catenin. ï¢-Catenin has been implicated in potentiating hyperproliferation and tumor formation, where it has been suggested that ï§-catenin can suppress tumorigenicity. Over expression of ï§-catenin has been shown to suppress cell proliferation and cell tumorigenicity in experimental animals. Also, reduced ï§-catenin expression has been reported in tumor tissues and metastatic lesions of renal cells, esophageal carcinomas and in skin carcinomas. |
