| Background: | The murine lectin-related Ly49 gene family is functionally analogous to the human killer cell Ig-like receptor (KIR) family of class I major histocompatibility complex (MHC) receptors. The Ly49 family contains at least 16 full-length genes and pseudogenes (Ly49A to Ly49Q). The Ly49Q gene encodes an approximately 30 kDa protein with an immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motif (ITIM) in its cytoplasmic domain. Ly49Q appears to be involved in the regulation of cytoskeletal architecture of macrophages through ITIM-mediated signaling. In contrast to other members of the Ly49 family, Ly49Q is not expressed on natural killer cells, but is instead detected in granulocytes and myeloid precursors in bone marrow. Ly49Q is also detected in lower levels in macrophages and monocytes, and expression levels are enhanced by IFN-ï§ treatment. |
