| Background: | Members of solute carrier family 26 (SLC26) are anion exchangers with diverse substrate specificities. They are mainly expressed on epithelial cells and play a central role in anion secretion and absorption. SLC26A6 is widely distributed in human tissues and mediates Cl-/oxalate exchange, Cl-/HCO3- exchange, and Cl-/OH- exchange. Mice lacking the slc26a6 gene are deficient in intestinal oxalate secretion; this deficiency enhances the net absorption of oxalate and increases the risk of calcium oxalate urolithiasis. |
