| Background: | SLC15A4, also known as peptide/histidine transporter 1 (PHT1), is a member of the proton oligopeptide cotransporter family. It is involved in the transport of free histidine and also certain di- and tripeptides. The expression of the SLC15A4 protein is observed throughout the gastrointestinal tracts, whereas at the transcriptional level, it is detected in various organs, including the skeletal muscle, kidney, liver, heart, brain, and colon. Recently, genetic polymorphism in the SLC15A4 gene is suggested to play a role in susceptibility to type 2 diabete. |
