| Background: | SLC2A5, also known as glucose transporter type 5 (GLUT5), belongs to the facilitative glucose/fructose transporter family and plays a role in the uptake of fructose in the small intestine and kidney. A high fructose diet enhances the expression of SLC2A5 in the small intestine of mice. Increased fructose consumption is associated with many aspects of the metabolic syndrome, such as hypertension, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia. Thus, SLC2A5 and related transporter genes, including SLC26A6, are suspected to play a role in various metabolic disorders. SLC2A5 is also found in mature spermatozoa and is suggested to be a reliable indicator of terminal maturation of male germ cells in the testis. |
