| Background: | SLC2A11, also known as GLUT11, is a member of the facilitative glucose transporter family, and has the highest similarity with fructose transporter SLC2A5/GLUT5 (about 42%). GLUT11 has at least three splice variants (GLUT11-A, GLUT11-B, and GLUT11-C) that differ in their N-termini region. The three GLUT11 isoforms are distributed in a tissue specific manner. GLUT11-A is expressed in heart, skeletal muscle, and kidney, GLUT11-B in kidney, adipose tissue, and placenta, and GLUT11-C in adipose tissue, heart, skeletal muscle. Functional differences among these isoforms as a sugar transporter for glucose and fructose, however, have not been found. |
