| Background: | SLC6A3, also known as DAT1, is a transporter for the neurotransmitter dopamine. SLC6A3 regulates dopamine homeostasis by reuptaking dopamine released into the synaptic cleft. SLC6A3 polymorphisms are associated with nicotine addiction, especially cessation attempts from individual cigarette smoking. Polymorphisms in the SLC6A3 gene have also been reported to constitute one cause for Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the most common childhood-onset behavioral disorder. |
