Background:

SLC3A1/rBAT, a member of the
cystine, dibasic, neutral amino acid transporter family, is
expressed on the brush border membrane of epithelial cells
of kidney and small intestine. Several mis- and non-sense
mutations of the SLC3A1 gene have been found to cause
inherited cystinuria, a disease characterized by defective
renal resorption of cystine.
