SLC1A3/EAAT1/GLAST1 is a member of the high-affinity sodium-dependent transporter family that control neurotransmitter concentrations at the excitatory glutamatergic synapses of the mammalian central nervous system. Accumulation of extracellular excitatory amino acids can be cytotoxic and may also lower the seizure threshold in epilepsy. Some mutations in the SLC1A3 gene have been reported to relate with episodic ataxia, seizures, migraine, and alternating hemiplegia.
