Immune cells such as T-cells and NK-cells directly recognize non-self cells (virus infected cells, tumor cells, etc.) and kill them. A 51Cr release test is generally utilized to measure cell-mediated cytotoxicity of these cells. However, the 51Cr release test has numerous drawbacks, including the use of radioisotopes, high cost and the need for specific laboratory equIPPment. To avoid the use of radioisotopes (RI), many non-RI methods have been developed. It is reported flow cytometric analysis using annexin V is one of the non-RI methods that has equivalent accuracy to the 51Cr release test.
